“I’m running to give Ward 3 a thoughtful voice at Council and to contribute to decisions about the future of our community.”
A MESSAGE FROM DON
Algonquin Highlands has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up spending summers at Oxtongue Lake, and since retiring, I have had the good fortune to spend my time here year-round.
I’m running for Council because I care deeply about this community and want to contribute to its future.
I spent my career as a creative director in advertising, where much of my work involved listening, understanding different perspectives, managing competing priorities and finding practical solutions. I believe those skills are also important in local government.
The next Council will face important decisions about municipal services, rising costs, economic development, our natural environment and the future organization of local government.
My approach is straightforward: listen to residents, do the homework, ask good questions, consider the evidence and make thoughtful decisions based on what is in the long-term interests of our community.
AS A COUNCILLOR, I WOULD:

LISTEN to residents and bring their concerns to Council.

RESPECT taxpayers’ dollars and carefully examine how they are spent.

PLAN responsibly for the future while considering what makes Algonquin Highlands work.

WORK HARD to represent residents throughout Ward 3.
I’d be honoured to earn your support.
ABOUT DON

Don Embree’s family connection to Oxtongue Lake goes back to the 1950s, when his grandparents vacationed in the area, bought a piece of land and built the family cottage themselves. Years later, Don began spending time at Oxtongue from his first year of life, and the lake has been part of his life ever since. Today, he and his partner, Catherine, spend time there year-round on the same property where that original family cottage once stood.
Don spent more than 30 years in advertising as a creative director, leading creative teams and working with national and international brands. His career taught him the value of listening, asking good questions, working with people who bring different perspectives, and finding practical and creative solutions to problems.
Don is an active member of the community. He volunteers with Oxtongue Lake for Arts and Culture (OLAC) and with a community radio station, where he can normally be heard on air several days a week sharing his love of music. He has also become a familiar face behind the barbecue at the annual Oxtongue Lake Canada Day celebration, helping raise funds for the local fire department.
Don enjoys Algonquin Highlands in every season. In the warmer months, you’ll find him boating, fishing, walking Daisy or simply sitting by the lake. Winter means hockey, fires and enjoying food with friends and family.
After a lifetime connected to this area, Don decided to run for Council because he now has the time and experience to give back in a meaningful way. He wants to help ensure Algonquin Highlands remains a strong, welcoming and beautiful place to live, work, visit and enjoy for generations to come.
